Pons grabs Barcelona pole, Frers extends strong AM form in qualifying
Newly-crowned Blancpain GT Sports Club Overall champion Anthony Pons will line up on pole position for Saturday afternoon's Qualifying Race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which plays host to the series' 2017 season finale this weekend. The AKKA ASP driver posted a 1:50.486 flyer with his #72 Mercedes-AMG GT3 to pip team-mate Mauro Ricci (#87 AKKA ASP Mercedes-AMG GT3).
In the Iron Cup fight, Klaus Dieter Frers (#3 Artega Rennsport Ferrari 488 GT3) had the upper hand over championship rival and current points leader Stephen Earle (#111 Kessel Racing Ferrari 458 Italia GT3).
Having already topped FP2, Pons extended his strong form with his third pole position of the season. FP1 pacesetter Ricci was right on his tail though, slotting in a mere 0.136s behind the Frenchman.
It was a very solid effort from BMS Scuderia Italia's Luigi Lucchini, who hoisted the #7 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 up to third place. AF Corse' Patrick Van Glabeke continued to show the sort of competitive pace he has had all year by posting the fourth fastest time with the #488 Ferrari 488 GT3.
P5 on the grid will be the returning Nicolas Vandierendonck in the #63 Shipex By Ombra Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3. In the Iron Cup class reserved for drivers aged 60 and over, Frers set the eighth fastest time overall to go quickest in class. The German driver headed main title rival Earle, while two-time Iron Cup champion Martin Lanting completed the category's qualifying top three with the #48 Ferrari 458 GTE.
In the Xtra Cup class, which caters to 'Trophy' cars, Mario Cordoni (#70 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo) outpaced GDL Racing team-mate Dilantha Malagamuwa, who drives the same model on the #24 entry.
Saturday's Qualifying Race gets under way at 15:40, local time. The 25-minute contest will be streamed live on the Blancpain GT Sports Club website
